The country laid out a development plan on Thursday to become the world leader in A.I. by 2030, aiming to surpass its rivals technologically and build a domestic industry worth almost $150 billion.

For now, the American defense industry will find Chinese AI most troubling. But a massive AI commitment will change the nature of life sciences, autonomous vehicles, advanced manufacturing, IoT, and other next-generation industries.

As American R&D activities become more fractured, Chinese government-industry coordination may prove decisive.
